waraji matsuri わらじまつり festival of the huge straw sandals
(from Mount Haguro)

- quote -
The Waraji Matsuri is an annual festival that fills the main street of Fukushima City in early August.
The festival originally finds its roots in the Mount Shinobu Dawn Procession. During the festival, visitors can see the local residents wearing traditional festival outfits such as yukata, happi, and original costumes while they perform a large variety of exciting dances. Notable performances include Heisei Waraji Ondo and Dancing Soda Night. There is also a dedication ceremony for the waraji (straw sandal), and many exciting fun-filled events for young and old alike, including the Waraji Kyoso race.

quote
Fukushima to host weekend of cultural festivals
Local festivals representing areas across Japan will be held in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, on the last weekend of May, with the aim of reviving the local tourism industry.

The city, a popular historical site, once attracted many tourists, especially students on school excursions. Students from some 1,500 schools visited regularly every year.

But last year's great earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated Pacific coastal areas, including Fukushima, as well as the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co., changed the landscape dramatically.

Many rich historical sites were left almost deserted, including Tsurugajo Castle and memorial sites for Byakkotai teen warriors, who fought for the Tokugawa shogunate in the Boshin war, an 1868-1869 civil war between Tokugawa royalists and forces aiming to restore Imperial rule to Japan.
...
At the Fukushima Festival, about 20 groups from 10 prefectures across Japan will show off their local traditions with dances, music, decorative floats and other distinctive items.

Participants will include the Hirosaki Neputa Matsuri from Aomori Prefecture, the Omuta Daijayama Matsuri from Fukuoka Prefecture, the Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko from Okinawa Prefecture and the Yosakoi dance from Fukushima, as well as the more contemporary Asakusa Samba Carnival from Tokyo.

On the eve of the festival, Shohei Muroi, mayor of Aizuwakamatsu, will deliver a speech calling for resolve to work for recovery.
