kakureya ya neko ni...Kobayashi Issa

かくれ家や猫ニもすへる二日灸
kakureya ya neko ni mo sueru futsukakyuu

This hokku is from the second month (March) of 1819, when Issa was visiting students near his hometown. Later Issa placed it it near the beginning of Year of My Life. He also made one version that begins with a very minor difference, kakureya ya, which doesn't change the meaning, but here I translate the most famous version. The hokku seems to be about Issa giving himself moxibustion, a kind of heat therapy related to acupuncture, on the second day of the lunar second month, a date, along with the second of the eighth month, on which the healthful effects of moxibustion were believed to be twice as strong.

On lunar 2/2 in 1819, Issa was at the house of one of his students who was a doctor of East Asian medicine, but perhaps Issa has been left alone while the doctor is out visiting patients or is seeing patients in the front room of the house. Issa often uses kakurega, "hidden/unvisited house" to refer to himself living in a rundown tenement house or being in a lonely situation in which people don't visit him, and in this hokku he seems to feel somewhat lonely, since lunar 2/2 was a minor holiday on which families, clans, and immediate neighborhoods got together and gave each other moxibustion. It was thought that giving moxibustion to children would help them escape childhood diseases, so there were usually a lot of children at these 2/2 therapy get-togethers. Doing moxibustion to yourself on 2/2 was a bit difficult and uncommon, and Issa may feel especially lonely because he may wish he were at home in his hometown, where he could give heat therapy to his wife and she to him. Perhaps he imagines his wife giving tiny doses of semi-moxibustion to their daughter, who is still an infant.

MORE by Chris Drake
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/translatinghaiku/conversations/messages/4828
